DoctorPage – Bio of Dr Tan Poh Kok, Obstetrician and Gynaecology
Dr.Tan Poh Kok is a senior obstetrician and gynaecologist who offers a wide range of obstetrical and gynaecological services for women of all ages, employing proven diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.
Dr.Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1991 with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees (MBBS). He obtained his post-graduate qualification from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology (United Kingdom) in 1998. Thereafter, Dr Tan achieved Specialist Accreditation with the Ministry of Health Singapore and the Singapore Medical Council in 2001.
Dr. Tan was a Senior Consultant at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Singapore General Hospital (SGH), one of the biggest, regionally-renowned JCI-accredited hospitals in Singapore. Besides providing care for pregnant women as well as general gynaecological services, Dr Tan has a special interest in the field of Uro-gynaecology, a sub-specialty dealing with female pelvic floor disorders such as post-natal (post-pregnancy) or post-menopausal womb prolapse and female urinary incontinence (involuntary urinary leakage).
In 2005, Dr.Tan received the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) Fellowship Award in Urogynaecology & Pelvic Floor Reconstruction Surgery and pursued his advanced sub-specialty training in Uro-gynaecology in Melbourne, Australia. Upon return from his advanced training, he was appointed Co-director of Pelvic Floor Disorder Service at Singapore General Hospital and was instrumental in the development of numerous in-house patient education pamphlets and protocols and clinical guidelines for managing women with urinary incontinence, uterine and vaginal prolapse. He has extensive experience in performing vaginal surgeries including vaginal hysterectomy for non-prolapse benign uterine conditions (such as uterine fibroids / adenomyosis) as well as pelvic floor reconstruction for womb prolapse. He is also well-versed in laparoscopic (key-hole) pelvic surgery for common gynaecological conditions (eg ovarian cysts and fibroids).
Dr Tan is a very dedicated teacher to medical students, resident physicians, visiting fellows and nursing staff alike. Before Dr Tan left for private practice, he was the Clinical Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin (YLL) School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He was the examiner at the MBBS Obstetrics and Gynaecology Examinations held at YLL School of Medicine since 2003.
Dr Tan’s compassion and patient-centred care is evidenced by the numerous awards he was bestowed with over the years. On numerous occasions, he was the recipient of Service from the Heart Award. This is an award given to SGH staff who receives many accolades from patients (see patient testimonials below).
